ABOUT TWIZEL
“The Town of Trees”
Twizel has a population of approximately 1200 people. It is a quaint and quiet township and the residents make you feel very welcome. Twizel is situated in the Mackenzie Basin in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand, 63 km south of Mt Cook (45 minutes drive), 270 km from Christchurch (an easy 4 hour drive) and 210 km from Queenstown (an easy 3 hour drive).
Twizel is set in a stunning environment with the Southern Alps as a western backdrop and Mt Cook, considered to be the “centre piece” of the MacKenzie Basin, rising majestically to the north and visible from many locations within the area.
Twizel is also known as "the town of trees". Millions of trees were planted in riverbeds and in the areas that were restored after the hydro construction. Twizel is the focus of that work with more than 250,000 trees planted just in the greenbelt. Six lakes including Tekapo and Pukaki are within a 1 hour drive.
During the fishing season Twizel usually enjoys dry days with temperatures in the mid 20C- 30C, however, it can experience some cold, wet and windy days as well as heat-waves.
